Coit Tower: A Skyline Icon in San Francisco, CA
Coit Tower, a slender white concrete column rising from the top of Telegraph Hill, is more than just an emblem of San Francisco’s skyline. It’s a historic landmark that offers panoramic views of the city and the San Francisco Bay. Here is another local favorite.
At 210 feet tall, Coit Tower is a prominent feature of the Telegraph Hill neighborhood. From its observation deck, 32 feet below the top, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Fishermen’s Wharf and other iconic city landmarks.
The tower was officially opened to the public in 1933[^6^]. Its creation was made possible through a bequest left by Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a prominent philanthropist and patroness of San Francisco’s firefighters.
The tower was designed by Arthur Brown, Jr., who also assisted in the design of the city’s famous City Hall. However, the park that houses the tower, Pioneer Park, is much older. It spans an area of 4.89 acres and was officially opened in 1876.
Inside Coit Tower, you’ll find a series of murals created under the Public Works of Art Project. These murals, which depict life in California during the Great Depression, are considered some of the best examples of fresco painting in the country.
To fully appreciate the artistry and history inside the tower, guided tours are offered. However, due to the tower’s location atop Telegraph Hill, parking is limited, so public transportation or walking is recommended.
Coit Tower is typically open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission to the tower costs $8. However, please note that to reach the observation deck, visitors must be able to climb 40 steps.
