Acupuncture

A whole person approach to pain relief

Our San Francisco acupuncture clinic provides a whole person approach to pain relief. To achieve this, we’ve designed a unique treatment method. It helps improve your well-being and remedy a wide range of illnesses.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine practice. It involves using tiny, single-use needles to restore the body’s optimal health.

Contrary to popular belief, this method is not a treatment. At least in the way conventional medicine thinks of treatment. So we do not try to treat any disease.

Instead, skilled acupuncturists use well-studied techniques shown to promote your body’s self-healing. As a result, you can obtain and retain your best function.

So how does acupuncture work? In brief, our unique treatment method impacts how ailments affect you. This can significantly change how you experience health challenges, if at all.

In the meantime, you’ll deliver the right support and resources to your body. As a result, it can begin to heal itself, as intended. The body wants to feel well. That is its natural state.

It simply needs the right building blocks to do so.

Our San Francisco community acupuncture is widely known for its work in the area of myofascial pain relief. So if you’re experiencing neck, shoulder, back, hip and knee pain, come see us.

Acupuncture can also complement any conventional medical treatment you receive. It’s not one or the other! Both can help your body function optimally. And unlike some herbal remedies acupuncture doesn’t interact with medicine prescribed by your doctor.

How & Why Acupuncture Works

Qi Is Your Life Force

In traditional Chinese medicine, your “Qi” or life force, courses throughout the body. This flow exists both on the surface (for example skin) and among internal organs (such as the liver). In short, everything is connected!

When the body is functionally optimally, this Qi flows uninterrupted. It unifies your whole body, mind, and emotion as one.

In the practice of acupuncture, we use a map of the body known as a meridian chart. This “map” is a visual representation of your body’s meridians. See chart .

Qi Flows Through Meridians

Meridians are channels of Qi that connect various parts of your external body with its inner workings. Acupuncture is a complex science. But to keep it simple, we’ll focus on the 12 major meridians. These mirror each other on both sides of your body, and include:

  1. Tai Yang, also known as Greater yang- most external and found on the back of the body.
  2. Yang Ming-Brightness yang– Found on the front of the body.
  3. Shao Yang-Lesser yang – Found on the back of the body
  4. Tai Yin-Greater yin. Found on the front where the lung and spleen qi interact
  5. Shao Yin-Lesser yin– Found on the back where the heart and kidney Qi interact with one another
  6. Jue Yin-Absolute yin. Most internal and found in the middle of the body where liver and pericardium Qi interact.

Meridians Have Points

Along these pathways, you have 350 acupuncture points. Ancient practitioners of acupuncture chose these points because they observed positive effects.

Even though, they didn’t fully understand the importance of these points“scientifically”, they could see the results. Observation is the first step to scientific discovery.

The Science

Of course, observing positive effects is not good enough for most people today. Instead, we want scientific proof. So today, modern researchers have gone further. They’ve sought to understand why and how acupuncture works. As a result of scientific research, they’ve  suggested that acupuncture points contain plenty of:

  • Nerves
  • Muscles as well as
  • Connective tissue

How does this explain how these techniques work? Practitioners have found themselves able to use acupuncture at specific points. By doing so, they can redirect the flow of Qi through that meridian. In turn, this has various repeatable and observable effects on the body.

Stimulating Points to Get Results

By stimulating these acupuncture points, we can influence various reactions in the body. Primarily, these are biochemical and neural, in nature. This isn’t just speculation or placebo effect. It’s science!

Scientists have conducted several repeatable studies. These have demonstrated acupuncture’s amazing abilities. It can enhance the production of several natural chemicals. You produce these chemicals to promote mental and physical balance and wellness. Primarily, these fall into two categories:

  • Neuropeptides – Your body’s natural pain regulators. (for example, natural opioids and non-opioid painkillers)
  • Neurotransmitters – Your body’s communicators and wellness balancers. (for example, serotonin, GABA, and dopamine, just to name a few)

It also has profound effects on the Central Nervous System. This part of your nerve network includes the brain and spinal cord. Using acupuncture, we can alter and bring about spinal reflex effects.

As we do, the procedure stimulates muscle relaxation and changes in internal organs.

Further research shows what’s happening in the brain. Acupuncture decreases activity in the limbic system. This essential component regulates how the body and mind respond to stress and illness. As a result, we can improve the regulation of the HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) Axis. Your HPA handles hormone balance and many of our physiological responses.

Better Health Without Side Effects

We don’t use any chemicals or medications with acupuncture. This is all you! The treatment simply activates and influences your body’s natural ability to balance, self-regulate, and heal.

Because acupuncture is natural, it has minimal side effects when performed correctly. What’s more, we can safely combine it with other treatments or medications without the risk of interactions.

Also, patients typically experience little to no pain. In fact, many find the procedure itself to be relaxing. That’s because acupuncture generates an immediate and prolonged dopamine boost in the body. Dopamine is your body’s natural relax and unwind neurotransmitter.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Truspine, acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions including chronic pain, neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain, sciatica, headaches and migraines, stress and anxiety, sleep issues, digestive problems, menstrual pain, and neuropathy. Our acupuncturists also work alongside chiropractic and dry needling treatments as part of a combined care plan.

Most patients feel little to no pain during acupuncture. The needles used are extremely thin, much finer than a hypodermic needle, and most people describe the sensation as a mild pressure, tingling, or warmth at the insertion point. Many patients actually fall asleep during their session.

It depends on your condition and goals. Acute issues like a muscle strain may resolve in 4 to 6 a series of sessions. Chronic conditions such as long-standing back pain, neuropathy, or migraines typically require 10 to 12 more sessions before lasting improvement is achieved. Your Truspine provider will give you a personalized treatment plan after your initial evaluation.

Truspine takes a multi-disciplinary approach, meaning acupuncture is not offered in isolation. Our practitioners integrate it with chiropractic care, dry needling, spinal decompression, and other therapies based on your specific condition. This means you are not just getting needles; you are getting a coordinated treatment plan designed to address the root cause of your pain or health issue.

Some insurance plans do cover acupuncture, including many PPO plans. We recommend calling our office at (415) 421-1115 or visiting our Patient Information page to verify your benefits before your first appointment. We also offer payment plans for patients without coverage.

Both use thin needles, but they come from different traditions and target different things. Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and works along meridian pathways to restore energy flow and whole-body balance. Dry needling is a Western technique focused specifically on releasing tight muscle knots to reduce localized pain and improve muscle function. Truspine offers both, and in many cases patients benefit from a combination of the two.

Yes, and this is one of the most common reasons patients seek acupuncture at Truspine. Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system in ways that reduce cortisol levels and promote the release of endorphins, creating a calming effect. Many patients report significant improvement in sleep quality and mood after just a few sessions.

Acupuncture at Truspine is performed by licensed acupuncturists. Dr. Philip Reh and Dr. Jennifer Drake are both experienced practitioners who work with patients across a wide range of conditions, from sports injuries and chronic pain to stress management and vertigo. Both are available at our San Francisco locations.

Truspine has two San Francisco locations that offer services: 50 Francisco Street, Suite 257 in the North Waterfront neighborhood, and 150 Lombard Street, Suite 2 in Telegraph Hill/North Beach. Acupuncture is offered at the second location. You can book online or call (415) 421-1115.

Absolutely, and this is one of Truspine’s key strengths. Many of our patients schedule acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments back-to-back in the same visit. The two therapies complement each other well: chiropractic addresses structural alignment while acupuncture supports nervous system regulation and soft tissue healing.

Yes. Acupuncture is widely recognized as safe when performed by a licensed practitioner using sterile, single-use needles, which is always the case at Truspine. Side effects are rare and typically limited to minor bruising or temporary soreness at the needle site.

Truspine takes an integrative, root-cause approach to head pain and migraines. Our practitioners—such as Dr. Jennifer Drake, DACM, L.Ac., who specializes in orthopedic acupuncture and dry needling, and Philip Reh, who utilizes advanced techniques like the Richard Tan Balance Method and Master Tung acupuncture—target muscle imbalances surrounding the head and neck to deliver fast, targeted relief. Combined with trigger point therapy and electronic stimulation (ESTIM), Truspine helps reduce both the frequency and intensity of migraines.

With a 5-star rating based on over 270 patient reviews, Truspine is a premier choice for stress and anxiety relief in North Beach and Telegraph Hill. Acupuncture helps down-regulate the nervous system, lower limbic system activity, and regulate the HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis to restore hormonal balance. Absolutely. We view every patient through a whole-person lens, evaluating habits across four key pillars of health: nutrition, sleep, digestion, and stress.
